It's a remarkable leap forward for the sustainable food industry, as California-based UPSIDE Foods announces plans to open its first commercial plant for cultivated meat and seafood in Glenview, Illinois. The company is investing at least $141 million in the facility, which will produce millions of pounds of cultivated meat and create a minimum of 75 jobs in the region, according to a report by ABC7 Chicago.

As the first cultivated meat company to receive FDA approval, UPSIDE Foods aims to eliminate the need for raising and farming animals for food, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional meat production methods. According to the Good Food Institute, cultivated meat production has the potential to reduce the usage of land, water, and emissions during the process, contributing towards solving the climate crisis by creating a more sustainable and resilient food system. The Glenview facility is set on the Dermody Logistics Campus, adjacent to Interstate 294, and marks a significant step toward this vision.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker enthusiastically welcomed the development, stating that the new facility will not only create new job opportunities but also advance the state's clean energy goals. "Here in Illinois, we are a hub for tech and innovation, thanks to our talented workforce and prime location in the heart of the Midwest," Pritzker said, as reported by Patch.com. The state is committed to supporting UPSIDE Foods and its growth in the cultivated meat industry.

Notably, UPSIDE Foods will receive one of the first Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) for Startups tax credits, as a part of the state's initiative to provide incentives to start-up companies investing in Illinois. This strategic collaboration at state, county, and local levels further highlights the importance of cultivating a sustainable future, and UPSIDE Foods is at the forefront of these efforts.

Dr. Uma Valeti, CEO and founder of UPSIDE Foods, expressed gratitude for the support and partnership the company has received during its site selection process. The chosen location enables UPSIDE Foods to tap into an incredible talent pool, a thriving innovation ecosystem, and a significant history of meat production in the region. As mentioned in the ABC7 Chicago report, Valeti stated, "We're excited that the next chapter of our journey towards building a more sustainable, humane, and abundant future will be in Illinois."

UPSIDE Foods' Glenview facility is scheduled to start with the production of ground cultivated chicken products, before eventually expanding to other species. The plant is expected to produce millions of pounds of cultivated meat, with the possibility of expanding to over 30 million pounds in the future. The successful upscaling of cultivated meat production at the commercial level could pave the way for a global shift towards environmentally responsible food systems.

As State Senator Laura Fine (D-Glenview) puts it, "This company will flourish in our community, as residents prioritize the company's concept of sustainability and a healthy, nutritious lifestyle." The opening of UPSIDE Foods' new facility marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable, humane, and abundant food supply, and is a testament to how the priority on sustainable living continues to grow.
