Early yesterday, September 29, a semitruck transporting anhydrous ammonia overturned near Teutopolis, Illinois, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. In response to the hazardous spill, nearby residents were evacuated authorities and roads were closed as per ABC News.
As reported by NBC Chicago, the accident occurred at around 9:25 PM, involving other vehicles on U.S. Highway 40. Hazardous conditions from the leakage prompted an evacuation order within a one-mile radius, impacting northeastern sections, of Teutopolis. The number of fatalities remains undisclosed.
First responders, including firefighters, EMTs, and hazardous material specialists, were on site to respond to the emergency. Residents were restricted from returning to their homes or traveling within the area while the leak was addressed.
An accident earlier that day on Interstate 70 had resulted in the redirection, of traffic onto U.S. Highway 40, including the ill-fated tanker. Anhydrous ammonia, a toxic and corrosive substance, was onboard the semitruck. This poses a serious health threat if inhaled at high concentrations or comes in contact with skin or eyes. The incident occurred in Teutopolis, a town located roughly 92 miles southeast of Springfield, furthers NBC Chicago.
