Conflict emerged in the West Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago yesterday, leaving three police officers injured and a dog shot. While officials claim that the suspect is in custody, the situation presents a much different narrative according to some eyewitnesses who live in the area.

According to ABC 7 Chicago, the incident occurred just after 11:20 a.m. when police were conducting an investigation in the 4000 block of West Wilcox Street. Officials say that a female offender, whose age was not immediately known, tried to intervene. At that moment, an unknown person unleashed two dogs, resulting in three police officers being bitten. In response, one officer opened fire, striking one of the dogs.

However, witness Brenda Cunningham presents a divergent account of the situation. In an interview with ABC 7 Chicago, Cunningham alleges that the police turned aggressive when the dogs came outside. She emphasized that the dogs "never got aggressive with these officers."

As CBS 2 reported, another neighbor captured cell phone video illustrating the incident. The footage shows a person walking with two dogs across an alley. Gunshots can be heard after dogs are seen barking. Brenda Cunningham argued that the dogs were not attempting to attack the officers, further questioning the need for the officer to discharge his weapon in a situation with numerous bystanders present.

The injured dog, which was reportedly shot in the face, was taken to animal care and control, but its condition remains unclear. The three police officers were transported to Mount Sinai Hospital for their injuries. Although the Chicago Fire Department initially stated that the officers were in serious condition, the police later clarified that the officers were in good condition, per ABC 7 Chicago.

The police have taken one woman into custody, and charges are pending as their investigation continues. However, it remains unclear what role authorities believe she played in the incident.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, this incident followed another separate event involving Chicago Police officers mere minutes earlier. As CBS 2 reported, an 18-year-old man was shot in the hand, arm, and stomach at 11:45 a.m. in Humboldt Park. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. Although a police officer was transported to a local hospital because of the incident, he was not injured by gunfire.
