San Jose's streets bore witness to yet another deadly incident on Friday when a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Fruitdale Avenue and Princess Anne Drive. This marked the 36th traffic fatality and the 21st pedestrian death in the city for 2023.
According to the report released by the San Jose Police Department (SJPD), the incident occurred when a 2017 Nissan sedan, driven by an adult male, struck an adult male pedestrian crossing Fruitdale Avenue using a mobility scooter. The pedestrian was not crossing at a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision, leading to the fatal accident.
The injured pedestrian was transported to a nearby hospital where, unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, the driver of the Nissan remained at the scene and aided the authorities with their investigation. The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office after proper confirmation and notification of the next of kin.
With 21 pedestrian deaths out of a total of 37 traffic deaths, and with the total number of fatal accidents reaching 36, it is evident that further action is necessary in order to curb the growing number of casualties.
