Portillo's, a household name in Chicago for its Italian beef, hot dogs, and chocolate cake shakes, unveiled an ambitious plan to expand from its current 70 restaurants in 10 states to a staggering 920 across America by 2043 as reported by NBC Chicago.

In a call with investors, the company's CEO and president, Michael Osanloo, shared that the plan prioritizes certain states for expansion, including Atlanta, Georgia, Denver, Colorado, and Las Vegas, Nevada. The decision comes after analyzing data from the company's online "Shop and Ship" orders, which revealed high demand in these areas.

Osanloo was quoted saying, "We're going where people are. We're going where people are moving. We're going where people are demanding our food. And so, that is our strategy is to go where the growth is." Portillo's has already shown its commitment to the Sunbelt by adding locations in Arizona, Florida, and Texas.

The company, established in 1963 as a modest hotdog stand in suburban Villa Park, plans to open 800 full-scale restaurants and 120 pick-up or drive-thru locations without a dining area. According to Audacy, the move comes after the company received positive responses from its newly opened locations, driving high revenues and confidence in their site selection strategy.

It's worth mentioning that the company went public in 2021, directing its expansion efforts then towards Florida and Texas before turning its gaze westwards to Colorado and Nevada. Ally Marotti, a senior reporter for Crain's Chicago Business, spoke of Portillo's plans on Audacy's Noon Business Hour and shared that the company's stock price had slipped to $15.73 this week from a high of $47.92 in November 2021.
