Earlier this week, Nathan Cooper, a 54-year-old Providence man, was sentenced to serve two consecutive life sentences at the Adult Correctional Institutions for the murder of his girlfriend, Sherbert Maddox, in 2022.
According to RI Attorney General's Office, a jury found Cooper guilty of one count of second-degree murder, one count of discharging a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence resulting in death, and two counts of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. The details of the case reveal a deeply unsettling sequence of events, in which Cooper not only took the life of Maddox on March 16, 2022, but hid her body in a grotesque manner, wrapping it in several layers of plastic wrap and bedding before concealing it inside his refrigerator.
As reported on RI Attorney General's Office, the response to Cooper's crimes included a thorough investigation by the Providence Police Department, Attorney General Scott Erickson, and Special Assistant Attorney General Ariel Pittner.
