Mark your calendars, dog owners and outdoor enthusiasts, as Memorial Park opens its gates to the long-awaited dog-friendly campsites in the Huckleberry Flat area starting September 15. San Mateo County Parks recently gave its approval for the designated camp area, making it the first San Mateo County Park location to offer camping with dogs, according to their website.
In a bid to expand dog recreation options, the Department has been evaluating various locations over the past six years. The recent pilot study conducted in Quarry Park in El Granada for off-leash dog walking on designated trails, was also presented to the Board of Supervisors, per a San Mateo County Parks article.
The Memorial Park offers eight tent campsites that allow on-leash dogs in its Huckleberry Flat area. Seven of the family-friendly sites can accommodate up to 12 people and three dogs, one of which is ADA accessible. Each campsite features two tables, one barbecue, one fire pit, and a hitching post for dogs. The eighth site offers flexible space for camping to accommodate up to 30 campers and five dogs, or for 50 picnickers.
Located close to dog walking trails in the Loma Mar area of Memorial Park, where on-leash dogs are allowed, the campsites allow dog owners and their furry friends to enjoy the great outdoors together. However, it is important to note that dogs are not allowed in other areas of Memorial, including Pescadero Creek, and Pescadero and Sam McDonald parks.
For those wanting to secure a spot at these much-anticipated dog-friendly campsites, reservations can be made now through the San Mateo County Parks website. Along with the resident/non-resident rate structure, a dog camping fee of $5 per night has been approved by the Board. The per night camping fees are $45 for county residents and $50 for non-residents, which will help offset costs related to dog waste supplies, washing stations, and administrative fees.
