Yesterday, September 19th, a series of armed robberies gripped various neighborhoods on Chicago's North and Northwest sides. At least one person was injured during the tragic events and, thus far, no suspects are in custody while the investigation continues, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The alarming string of incidents began around 7:30 pm on North Halsted Street in the Goose Island neighborhood, where a 66-year-old woman was violently seperated from her purse and car keys at gunpoint by three males emerging from a gray sedan. The assailants proceeded to flee the scene in the woman's own car, a Chrysler 300.
Later that evening, in the Logan Square neighborhood, the armed-robbery crew continued their spree, striking at two different locations. Around 9:30 pm, another 66-year-old woman had her purse and belongings taken by two armed criminals stepping out of the same gray sedan. This victim, reportedly in good condition at last report, was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, around the same time, a couple in their mid-twenties was approached by two males exiting a gray sedan, also carrying handguns. The couple was able to flee the scene without injury or loss of property.
Aside from these, a 60-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint in the 2500-block of West Division Street as he stood in a parking lot. His assailant stole his wallet and phone before fleeing. Another couple was robbed at gunpoint in the 1400-block of North Rockwell Street while gathering in the front yard of a residence. The presence of handguns prompted them to flee to the back of the property, narrowly escaping injury or loss.
Finally, at approximately 9:40 pm, a 41-year-old man became the final target as he was unloading groceries in the 1700 block of North Sawyer Avenue. Two males once again exited the gray sedan that had become a familiar sight throughout the night and took the man's wallet at gunpoint. According to the Chicago Tribune, the man was fortunately not harmed.
The police have yet to determine a clear connection among the robberies, as reported by ABC 7 Chicago, but similarities in the culprits' descriptions and the use of the gray sedan have emerged.
