The circumstances surrounding the 2021 drowning of Dedham high schooler Alonzo Polk have been at the center of a tense and emotionally-charged investigation. Yesterday, marked a new chapter in this tragic saga when retired Massachusetts State Police captain James Coughlin and his wife, Leslie, were assaulted outside Dedham District Court, following their controversial sentencing on charges from the June 2021 incident, according to Boston25 News.

Emotions ran high as on that same day, the Coughlins had pleaded guilty to furnishing alcohol to a minor and admitted to sufficient facts for a probable finding of guilt on charges of reckless endangerment of a child, as stated in NBC Boston. While the district attorney's office had requested a two-and-a-half-year sentence for the couple, the presiding judge opted for a more lenient approach, sentencing them to a one-year jail term, which was suspended for three years. They also received 100 hours of community service, according to the Boston Herald.
As the couple exited the courthouse, James Coughlin was blindsided and attacked by at least three individuals who punched, kicked, and reportedly knocked him to the ground as reported by the Boston Herald. Police and an ambulance responded, but the two injured parties opted not to be transported for further evaluation. The Dedham Police Department is now handling the case, while the assailants continue to elude capture.
The 17-year-old Polk had been attending a graduation party at the Coughlin's home when he was found unresponsive at the bottom of their swimming pool as reported by Boston 25.
Attorney Brian Kelly, representing the Coughlins, has called for the district attorney's office to take swift action in light of the assault. Speaking on the unprovoked nature of the attack, Kelly has demanded justice for his clients and urged the authorities to "do their job" in apprehending the assailants.
"It's outrageous. It was a vicious assault for no reason at all." - Attorney Brian Kelly, as quoted in the Boston Herald.
Meanwhile, Polk's family has steadfastly sought answers and closure amidst this tragedy. In June 2021, Polk's mother, Debra Rowell, spoke passionately at a rally, stating, "If we have to stop the town of Dedham, we are going to find out what happens to my son. Everybody is still standing, and my son is gone, and I want justice, and I'm going to get it, as reported by Boston 25.
