The City of Alameda has decided to embark on a bold, innovative journey with their guaranteed income pilot program, Rise Up Alameda. This program plans to provide $1,000 per month to 150 low-income Alameda households for a two-year period, with the primary goals of reducing their economic instability and redefining perceptions surrounding poverty and the provision of public benefits, according to the City of Alameda FB post.

Set into motion with the aid of $4.6 million from the American Rescue Plan Act, the Rise Up Alameda website details the City's intent to not only support participating families but also inform and bolster a broader conversation on public benefits and anti-poverty policies. The application period for this groundbreaking initiative began on September 8 and will end at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 18.

Including but not limited to historically disenfranchised groups such as Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, the program aims to reach a diverse array of citizens in need. Others beneficiaries include those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, immigrant and refugee communities, senior citizens, affordable housing tenants and renters, individuals with disabilities, and families with children or enrolled College of Alameda students, according to the program's information page.

Operation Dignity, a local organization partnering with the City of Alameda, works closely with city staff and community organizations to raise awareness about Rise Up Alameda ensuring that potentially eligible individuals are fully informed about the program and its life-changing possibilities.
