With Caltrans restricting northbound Interstate 5 to a single lane for a 56-hour period, it is crucial for locals to plan accordingly and consider alternate routes to navigate the city's thoroughfares during this time.
The temporary lane reduction, beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday and lasting until 5 a.m. on Monday, is part of Caltrans' efforts to conduct emergency repairs on the freeway bridge over state Route 163, per Caltrans. In the preceding weeks, similar restrictions were imposed on southbound lanes of I-5, demonstrating a pattern of infrastructural repair work seemingly necessary to ensure the integrity and longevity of the freeway bridge through downtown San Diego, as per Caltrans District Director Gustavo Dallarda's statement in The San Diego Union-Tribune.
During these traffic disruptions, northbound I-5 drivers should still be able to access state Routes 15, 75, 94, and 163. However, the westbound SR-94 connector to I-5 will be closed all weekend, as will the F Street on-ramp and Sixth Street off-ramp. Other on-ramps — B Street, Pershing Drive, and 19th Street — will be closed during daytime hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. but open at night. As Fox 5 San Diego reported earlier today, motorists are advised to utilize alternative routes, such as Interstate 805 or Interstate 15, to bypass potential delays due to these closures.
Given the extensive construction work involved in repairing the I-5 bridge over State Route 163, residents nearby should anticipate noise and lighting disturbances throughout the weekend. Caltrans crews initiated the bridge project in mid-August, with progress thus far allowing them to maintain operations during weekends without further inconveniencing weekday traffic, as detailed in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
These efforts constitute maintenance work aimed at replacing portions of aging concrete on the bridge deck, in addition to the approach slabs on either end of the bridge. Subsequently, the structure will be overlaid with a novel, flexible concrete material, with the potential of improving durability and resisting wear over time. Furthermore, crews will seize the opportunity to clean and maintain areas typically inaccessible during I-5's normal operations, demonstrating a comprehensive approach toward optimizing the maintainability and longevity of the infrastructure.
