The city has responded with new road repair projects that promise improved and safer streets for the neighborhoods of Clairemont, Bay Ho, City Heights, Ridgeview, and Emerald Hills. As reported on the City of San Diego's website, starting today, the area is set to undergo a series of enhancements in the form of slurry seal projects, which are considered cost-effective and efficient.
Preventing the streets' deterioration is essential for improving the general condition of San Diego's road network. By taking proper care of the roads, the city hopes to reduce the necessity for more expensive asphalt overlays and reconstructions. A slurry seal, a mixture of asphalt emulsion, sand, and rock, is applied to the street surface, extending the life of already in-good-conditioned roads.
According to the City of San Diego's announcement, the ongoing projects will span over a three-week period, depending on the weather. The impact of these projects is indeed significant, with streets being selected for resurfacing via a Pavement Management System. This system assigns an Overall Condition Index (OCI) score to each street segment, taking into account the pavement's roughness and cracks.
In addition to the OCI, various factors like traffic volume, road type, equity, climate resiliency, mobility, maintenance history, and available funding play crucial roles in prioritizing street paving. The process ensures that road repairs are grouped within a neighborhood, focusing on streets with similar conditions, or executed after projects like pipeline replacement.
San Diego's investment in its infrastructure is part of a more extensive network of road improvement undertakings throughout the United States. While aging infrastructure is a national issue, many cities have recognized the need to address crumbling roads actively. For example, Seattle has implemented maintenance and paving programs focusing on sidewalks, bike lanes, and general street maintenance. In cities like Los Angeles, pothole repair requests have risen, prompting the local government to take more decisive action.
