As our society becomes increasingly disposable – with broken items being tossed aside and replaced with shiny new versions – a movement flourishes, aiming to reduce waste and instead promote fixing what we already have. Enter the San Diego Fixit Clinic, an organization that's not only fighting against mounting electronic waste but also aiming to bring communities together.
According to a recent Eventbrite page, the organization invites individuals to bring in their broken electronic items, household appliances, toys, and more to their monthly events for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. With the aid of expert coaches and specialized tools, attendees can learn how to troubleshoot and repair their items, gaining valuable insights into how they were built and how they function – a true hands-on experience.
The San Diego Fixit Clinic takes place at various locations within San Diego County. The next event is scheduled for September 12th at the Spring Valley Branch Library from 5 PM - 8 PM per the San Diego County's Twitter post. Inclusivity and curiosity are fostered, welcoming walk-ins, families and children to participate.

But, the San Diego Fixit Clinic experience is not limited to just fixing things. The organization also hosts volunteer recruitment events to involve community members who possess valuable repair talents or skills that can support the program. From front desk assistance, photography, data entry, grant writing, to idea brainstorming – the clinic invites people with diverse backgrounds, according to an Eventbrite listing.
In a unique collaboration with I Love A Clean San Diego, the September 12th event will host a Clothing Swap, where gently used clothing items can be traded, lessening the environmental impact of new production and reducing landfill waste. Participation in the clothing swap is free.
