The decision demonstrates the foresight of San Pablo's leadership, as Mayor Abel Pineda cited Hickey's solid reputation, skill set and almost 17 years of local government experience across both Northern and Southern California.
Hickey's credentials present an impressive array of accomplishments. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Pomona College in 1995 and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1998, he commenced his law career with a clerkship in the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office. His subsequent experience as an Associate Attorney at private law firms such as Best, Best & Kreiger, LLP and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, LLP contributed to shaping Hickey as a sound legal professional.
Moreover, Hickey served as the Assistant City Attorney for the City of Redondo Beach and recently held the same position with the City of Walnut Creek, illustrating a dedication to public service. In high regard, he maintains his membership in the California State Bar.
San Pablo City Manager Matt Rodriguez emphatically praised Hickey for the exceptional reputation and work ethic he brings to the city. Rodriguez is confident in Hickey's ability to effectively navigate the complex demands of municipal law and believes he will bring substantial benefit to the City's Executive Management Team and broader organization.
Hickey's mastery of municipal law extends to the fields of real estate, land use, and housing—the very areas that San Pablo requires an experienced professional to oversee. His official start date is on October 16 with an initial base salary set at $265,000 annually.
The departure of Teresa Stricker marks a transition for the city as she embarks on her new role as City Attorney for the City of Santa Rosa, located in California's Sonoma County.
