After being stuck along the shores of Stinson Beach since late July, the Chandalar sailboat is finally being dismantled on Wednesday morning. The boat's owner, Logan Walker, had been spending the past several weeks attempting to remove the boat himself, aided by an assembly of community volunteers, as per Kron4 news. Unfortunately, despite their ardent efforts, the boat has remained firmly entrenched in the beach's sand, which ultimately led to Marin County authorities intervening.

Initially, the Marin County Parks had given Walker until the end of August to salvage the vessel. A temporary restraining order was then granted by U.S. District Court Judge James Donato, which put a halt on authorities removing the boat until noon on Monday, according to a Marin Independent Journal article. With the restraining order lifted, Walker's time to remove the Chandalar by himself has officially ended.

Marin County Parks Director Max Korten expressed hope that the boat will be removed from Upton Beach this week, working alongside Parker Diving Service of Sausalito to devise a plan and coordinate a schedule. The current estimated cost of removal, which varies depending on the method and equipment needed, ranges between $26,000 and $42,000.

One of the main concerns behind the removal process revolves around avoiding environmental risks, as the Chandalar is situated in an environmentally sensitive area, close to the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary and Bolinas Lagoon. County and federal officials are working together to determine the sanctuary's potential financial contribution to the boat's removal. This removal is not only crucial for preserving marine life but also for ensuring public safety, as Marin County raised concerns that boat debris could pose potential risks to beachgoers.

Walker's unfortunate saga has attracted public attention and support, with community-led efforts helping him attempt the boat's removal, including a brief beaching of a second boat during a high tide towing attempt. Furthermore, an online fundraiser has managed to collect $6,799 to aid with towing costs and return transportation for Walker.
