The County TB Control Program has directly notified individuals known to have been potentially exposed and provided guidelines from health officials. As reported by the County News Center, individuals who test positive for TB but show no symptoms of active TB should seek a chest x-ray and medical consultation, as they may have a latent TB infection. Taking medicines for latent TB can prevent the infection from becoming active, ensuring individuals never get sick from the disease.
For immune-compromised individuals or those exhibiting symptoms of active TB, it is essential to see a medical provider for proper assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
It is worth noting that the number of active TB cases in San Diego County has decreased since the early 1990s, stabilizing in recent years, as per the County News Center. In 2020, 192 cases were reported, followed by 201 cases in 2021, and, importantly, 208 cases in 2022.
Individuals seeking more information about the potential TB exposure at SDSU are encouraged to contact the County TB Control Program at (619) 692-8621. By staying informed and following the appropriate guidelines, everyone can do their part to protect their own health and contribute positively to the community's welfare.
