19-year-old Darrick Bender has been charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated cruelty to animals, after reportedly shooting a dog. According to the Chicago Police Department, officers apprehended Bender yesterday, September 24.
Further investigation revealed that Bender had recklessly discharged a firearm, striking a dog in the 5000 block of S. La Crosse Ave., in Chicago's 8th District. Notably, the quick response of law enforcement resulting in the young offender's arrest, with a weapon recovered on scene, as reported by the Chicago Police Department.
Bender's charges entail one felony count of reckless discharge of a firearm, one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals, one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and one misdemeanor count of possession of ammunition without a valid firearm owners identification (FOID). In addition, he has been charged with three city ordinance violations.
Today, Bender is scheduled to face a detention hearing at 2600 S. California, where further proceedings in this case will take place.
