Yesterday, 19-year-old David Riley was arraigned on firearm charges stemming from a shooting on September 10, during which 14 rounds were fired according to Suffolk District Attorney. Riley faces charges of carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity feeding device, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and possession of a Class E substance.
District Attorney Kevin Hayden praised law enforcement for their efforts in removing "another high-capacity weapon capable of tremendous damage" from the streets and acknowledged the actions taken by Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston City Council to address the presence of illegal firearms and their flow into the city.
However, as Hayden points out, the issue of gun violence extends far beyond the reach of government and law enforcement. He emphasized the importance of addressing this epidemic on multiple fronts, including community groups, civic leaders, business sectors, ministers, and elected officials at the state and federal levels. "Only when we reach the understanding that gun violence is an epidemic afflicting all of society will we be on the right track to engage the forces necessary to squarely address what we're seeing," Hayden said according to Suffolk District Attorney.
Gun violence in the United States continues to quickly become a major public health crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2019, there were 39,707 firearm-related deaths in the United States as stated in CDC, making it essential that all relevant stakeholders take collective action to address this issue.
In a similar vein, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has launched initiatives to address the issue of gun violence in the city. Her approach focuses on supporting violence prevention programs, increasing community engagement, investing in youth, and creating safe spaces as stated in Boston.gov. This complex response aims to properly address the myriad underlying factors that contribute to gun violence and forge a path towards a safer and more cohesive community.
