Three Floyds Brewing, the Indiana-based brewery famous for its bold flavors and heavy-metal ambiance, is planning to reopen its brewpub and taproom in Munster, Indiana, after shutting it down in late 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. The target reopening date is set for May 2023, coinciding with the marquee festival, Dark Lord Day, according to Crain's Chicago Business.
The brewery, which has been operating mostly as a production facility for the past three years, is well known for drawing in thousands of enthusiasts, many from the Chicago area, during its Dark Lord Day in May. Despite its brewpub and taproom remaining closed, fans have been able to pick up beer at the brewery establishment.
As part of the brewpub revival plan, an outdoor space is being constructed, which could accommodate performances or private events. The food, beverage, and retail operations for the reopening project will be managed by Fifty/50 Restaurant Group, as reported by Eater Chicago. The group is behind successful Chicago ventures such as Kindling, West Town Bakery, and other renowned restaurants.
In 2018, Three Floyds Brewery announced major expansion plans, including the opening of a distillery; however, the pandemic put these plans on hold. During the lockdown period, the brewery continued its annual Dark Lord beer release, utilizing contactless pickup methods for the distribution of its coveted barrel-aged Russian imperial stout. They also adapted their Dark Lord Day festival to meet COVID restrictions, hosting a modified event for fans to attend.
Meanwhile, another popular Chicago beer brand, Revolution Brewing, has announced $1.8 million in renovations at its Avondale brewery off Elston Avenue, including solar panels, tuckpointing, and replacing windows. With plans to increase capacity for both storage and serving beer, the craft-beer landscape in the region is set to see a major shift going forward, as Block Club Chicago reported.
