A 21-month-old toddler tragically lost her life when she wandered into the road and was hit by a passing tow truck, in the small town of Chelsea, Maine. The young girl had been playing outside a home on Windsor Road when she found her way into the roadway and laid down.
According to Boston.com, a GMC flatbed tow truck, driven by a 62-year-old Chelsea man, was traveling north on the road when it fatally struck the child. The driver reportedly failed to recognize the child lying in the road until the collision occurred, New England Cable News reported.
Both witnesses and first responders attempted to save the toddler's life, performing CPR until she was transported to Maine General Hospital. Though their efforts were heroic, the young girl tragically succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead at the hospital.
It remains unclear whether the child had been under adult supervision at the time of the accident, but the Maine State Police have taken on the responsibility of investigating the cause of this incident. At present, no arrests have been made, and no further information has been released.
