
A young life was lost to gun violence following a homecoming football game at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, Illinois on Friday, September 15th. Marshawn Mitchell, a 14-year-old student at the high school, was fatally shot after the game, authorities confirmed. The traumatic event has left the community of Country Club Hills heartbroken and searching for answers and justice for young Marshawn.
The football game between Hillcrest High School and Oak Forest High School had been the focus of the night before the violence erupted. At around 9 p.m., as police were working to disperse the crowd after the game, a succession of gunshots reported from an unknown direction struck and severely wounded Mitchell, as per NBC Chicago. The young boy was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The Hillcrest Hawks football team released a statement in the aftermath of the shooting, expressing their deep sorrow and urging the community to pray for all those affected by this act of violence. "We are all saddened by the events that happened tonight after our Homecoming Football Game against Oak Forest. There is an active investigation by all the appropriate authorities! We are praying for all involved! Please pray for our staff and students who have been affected by this unfortunate, senseless act of violence," the statement read. In response to the tragedy, Bremen High School District 228, which oversees Hillcrest High School, confirmed their plans to offer support and resources to students and staff coping with the loss and trauma.
In a statement released by ABC 7 Chicago, the Bremen High School District 228 mourned the devastating loss of their student, Marshawn Mitchell. "It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the devastating loss of one of our Hillcrest High School students following a shooting incident that occurred on 175th Street after the conclusion of the varsity homecoming game Friday evening. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all those involved in this tragedy."
As a result of the shooting, the school's homecoming dance, which was originally scheduled for September 16, was canceled. The district also announced that supporting resources would be made available on Monday, September 18, to assist those affected by the tragedy. "We in District 228 are committed to the safety and overall well-being of our students and staff. The District will have supporting resources available on Monday for anyone who may need them," the district's statement read.
