Today, an early morning tragedy unfolded on the roadways of Long Grove, Illinois, as two trucks collided head-on, resulting in one fatality and two others being hospitalized with serious injuries. According to FOX 32 Chicago, the collision occurred around 10:10 a.m. on Route 53, just north of Lake Cook Road.
The driver of a 2021 Isuzu box truck was traveling north on Route 53 when, for reasons not yet known, he crossed into the southbound lanes, putting himself directly in the path of an oncoming 2016 Freightliner semi-truck. The Daily Herald reports the semi-truck's driver as a 49-year-old man from Dixon, Illinois. The violent impact of the crash resulted in the box truck driver losing his life at the scene, while an adult male passenger in the box truck suffered critical injuries and was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Given the magnitude of the collision, the semi-truck driver also sustained serious injuries and was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.
The identities of those involved in the crash have not been released.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office, alongside the Technical Crash Investigations Unit, is currently investigating the circumstances that led to the head-on collision. Additionally, the Lake County Coroner's Office is expected to conduct an autopsy.
The impact of the accident resulted in Route 53 (Hicks Road) being closed for several hours while the investigation began and crews worked to clear the wreckage.
