Earlier today, 33-year-old Raymond C. Gwin Jr. was found unresponsive in a holding cell at the Champaign County Sheriff's Correctional Facility, according to Fox Illinois. The tragedy came shortly after his father, Raymond C. Gwin Sr., was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of his daughter, Latoya Gwin, in July 2022, as reported by The News-Gazette.
Raymond Jr. was pronounced dead at 6 a.m., with the cause of death pending toxicology results from an autopsy performed on September 25th. Champaign County Coroner Duane E. Northrup has not yet released the cause of death, and an inquest may be held at a later date. While the Champaign County Coroner’s Office, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, and Illinois State Police are investigating the incident, the timeline of events raises questions and concerns in the community.
Young Gwin was booked into the jail on September 24th following his arrest for resisting a peace officer and possession of drug paraphernalia. Correctional officers found him unresponsive and unaided in his cell at 2:27 a.m. on September 25th, and life-saving measures were unsuccessful. His father, Raymond Sr., was transferred from the Champaign County Jail to the Department of Corrections just a week before his son’s untimely death. There, he was convicted of fatally shooting Latoya Gwin in the home they shared in Champaign, The News-Gazette reported.
