Claude Leboeuf, a 70-year-old man, spoke to the press, detailing his recent settlement with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fall River concerning the sexual abuse he encountered as an 8-year-old in 1960. Leboeuf described his decision to publicly detail the settlement as an attempt to reclaim the voice he'd lost for years and to offer aid to those facing similar scenarios.
Leboeuf's grueling journey to justice started years ago when he reached out to Mitchell Garabedian, a Boston-based lawyer that is a specialist in representing survivors of sexual and clergy abuse. Leboeuf recounted the specifics of his abuse, expressing how past traumas would sporadically echo in his mind, according to Boston.com.
Garabedian, having worked to represent many individuals who were victims of Porter's abuse, managed to secure a mid-five-figure settlement for Leboeuf. This was achieved despite the expiration of the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse lawsuits, per Boston.com. The case of Leboeuf highlights the trend of increased justice pursuit by survivors as states start repealing time limits for child sex crime lawsuits. Such efforts have been fruitful in states such as Vermont in 2019, Maine in 2021, and Maryland earlier this year, with a bill yet to pass in the Massachusetts Legislature.
In response to the settlement, the Diocese of Fall River recognized the "painful reality" of Leboeuf's case. The church emphasized its continued commitment to support the survivors of clergy sexual abuse and their families during the legal process and thereafter.
