On Saturday, October 14, Anaheim will launch a month-long celebration of Native American heritage, namely, Anaheim Reads. This community event aims to further enhance understanding of Native American history and culture while acknowledging the ongoing struggle for recognition and respect by indigenous communities, according to the City of Anaheim press release.
An upward trend in consciousness towards rights and dignities of marginalized communities in the United States, including indigenous communities, has emerged recently. Recognition of Native American heritage parallels increasing awareness of Black history, both narratives offering a rich chronicle of communities persisting in reclaiming their past in spite of historical overshadowing.
