The venture was intended to raise funds and alertness for the nonprofit organization Let Them Live, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. Sparking more than just conversation about anti-abortion, the demonstration also brought attention to the implications and effects of activism.
Maison Des Champs, previously found scaling eight other skyscrapers, was apprehended upon summiting the 588-foot structure. The public's reaction was mixed; some admired the bold feat, while others voiced concern over the disruption to building services and the reallocation of police and SWAT resources, as per WGN-TV.
Lamenting the misuse of resources for the event, local Timothy Moore pointed out an issue often contested during protests and activism - the potential extravagance of deploying fire trucks and police cars. Alternatively, Timothy Clement, a spokesperson for Let Them Live, praised Des Champs' actions, asserting that he effectively uses his skills to promote his beliefs and fundraise for expectant mothers to consider life, as detailed by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The criticism does not solely center around disruption. Deborah Pruitt, employed in the Accenture Tower, argued for more powerful and less intrusive methods of demonstration.
The timing of the climber's actions also raised eyebrows. Des Champs' climb coincided to with the Consul General of Israel's presence in the Accenture Tower, leading to suspicions of a deliberate connection, mentions WGN-TV. Yet, no link between the two events has been reported.
