The fire appears to have originated in the hotel's 17th-floor restaurant's pizza oven before spreading through ductwork to the roof. Firefighters battled the blaze from numerous perspectives until fully extinguishing it. With no injuries reported, the focus shifted to evaluating fire and water damage.
Despite successful containment and eradication, the fire caused the Contessa closure, scorching parts of the hotel's exterior. A second alarm was activated, leading to more emergency personnel arriving at the scene as smoke kept billowing from the roof.
As WHDH reports, all hotel guests were escorted out of the scene while some fire personnel remained to monitor potential hotspots. A building inspector was dispatched to examine the fire and water damage, key considerations for determining when The Newbury Boston will reopen.
