The City of Boston, Planning Office for Urban Affairs, and Fenway Community Development Corporation (Fenway CDC) recently announced the acquisition and preservation of 78 affordable housing units, known as Our Lady's Guild House (OLGH). Backed by the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation, this initiative aims to preserve, improve, and broaden access to affordable housing in Boston's Fenway neighborhood.
Established in 1946 by the Archdiocese of Boston, OLGH was initially positioned as a response to a call for affordable housing for women as per its official press release. The facility, situated near Kenmore Square in the Fenway area, has consistently offered secure, economical residence to female tenants and Boston-based students.
Securing the purchase of this housing was a process spanning ten years and involving multiple parties including the City of Boston, Fenway CDC, and OLGH residents. The acquisition guarantees long-term affordable housing at OLGH and will facilitate substantial improvements and modernization of the property, all while protecting existing tenancies.
In a statement of approval, Leah Camhi, Executive Director of Fenway CDC, indicated her organization’s eagerness to increase the availability of high-quality affordable housing in Fenway. Bill Grogan, President of the Planning Office for Urban Affairs, noted the agreement supports their mission "to meet the pressing need for affordable housing in Boston and uphold our ethical responsibility to ensure everyone has shelter."
