The Adult Literacy Initiative (ALI), a partnership between the City of Boston's Worker Empowerment Cabinet and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Adult and Community Learning Services unit, has launched in Boston to promote adult literacy, according to The City of Boston.
ALI supports 29 educational institutions to provide aid to about 3,500 students per year in a variety of disciplines, including literacy classes, job training, and ESOL classes.
The commitment to adult literacy is demonstrated by the rise in funding directed to these programs through the Office of Workforce Development (OWD) and the Boston Private Industry Council (PIC). The approved FY24 budget for these initiatives is $10,580,404, signifying a 10% raise in financial aid and emphasizing Boston's commitment to provide access to adult education.

ALI, in cooperation with the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet, established the Literacy Task Force in June 2023, which consists of 15 members tasked with studying literacy rates and developing plans to increase access to education and services.
