Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston and the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture recently introduced two grant opportunities, Boston Cultural Council (BCC) Organizational Grants and Neighborhood and Downtown Activation Grants, to promote arts, culture, and creative programming. The purpose of these grants is to enhance community wellbeing and acknowledge the influence of arts on the overall quality of life and sustainable development according to City of Boston article.
The grants intend making arts more accessible to communities, thus contributing positively to their development . They will enable Boston's diverse groups - small and large arts organisations, artists, collectives, and local small businesses - to conduct meaningful arts programs, as mentions Kara Elliott-Ortega, Chief of Arts and Culture for the City of Boston as stated in the cities official website.
The BCC Organizational Grants aim to support arts, culture, and creativity organisations in Boston with general operating expenses. These are for organisations having annual budgets under $2 million that are based in or provide programming in Boston. Grant sizes range from $5,000 to $10,000 and are primarily funded by the City of Boston and the Mass Cultural Council for local arts, culture, and creative programs.
On the contrary, the Neighborhood and Downtown Activation Grant support community-focused arts, culture, and creative activations in public spaces. The total fund of $5 million will be distributed over multiple rounds of applications, with grant sizes varying from $5,000 for a Cultural Festival to up to $400,000 for a Multiyear Activation as stated in City of Boston article. Funding for these grants comes from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Boston Planning and Development Public Impact Contribution Funds.
