Mayor Michelle Wu has launched Supplier Diversity Week in Boston on October 30. Alongside this, a series of initiatives were announced to promote inclusion and equitable growth in local businesses, says the City of Boston. Following an increase in the city's spending with certified MWBEs from 6% in 2022 to 14% in the 2023 fiscal year - a total of $151 million spent on contracts valued out of $1.08 billion.
To strive toward a fair and competitive market, Mayor Wu has orchestrated Supplier Diversity Week. To create opportunities, the historically excluded Boston-based businesses are assisted by investments in city staffing and technology upgrades, bringing the city closer to its goal of directing 25% of its spending at diverse firms.
Introduced as a part of these new initiatives, the Supplying Capital and Leveraging Education (SCALE) program has been created to support small local firms. Drawing from the Contracting Opportunity Fund and America Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, according to the City of Boston, it offers a range of resources to help the businesses, including technical assistance, educational programming, consulting services, and grant funding.
SCALE with a Request for Proposals (RFP), is leveraging $2.4 million of the allocated $9 million in American Rescue Plan funding to effectively support small businesses, notably those historically disadvantaged. The RFP stresses the importance of cost-effective, environmentally sustainable solutions, in line with Mayor Wu's goal to align Boston with the Green New Deal, stated the City of Boston.
Mayor Wu announced the awarding of 51 local minority and women-owned businesses with grants from the Contracting Opportunity Fund during fiscal year 2023. The funds will support capacity building for Boston-based businesses, reinforcing city commitment to inclusivity in contract awards, according to the City of Boston.
Among those benefiting from the initiatives is Bryant Williams, owner of BWilliams Painting Company. Williams credits the Boston Contracting Opportunity Fund with keeping his business in operation, as reported by the City of Boston. These developing businesses are serving the needs of their local communities, representing the power and benefits of Supplier Diversity Week.
