From September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month takes center stage, prompting the City of Boston to laud the endeavors and achievements of local Hispanic community leaders. According to a statement from Boston.gov, the Boston City Council granted the Pilares de la Hispanidad 2023 Award to thirteen remarkable Hispanic locals for their exceptional dedication to and impact on Boston and their individual neighborhoods.
Hispanic Heritage Month has its roots in 1968, under President Lyndon Johnson's regime, as Hispanic Heritage Week. It expanded into a month-long event during President Ronald Reagan's term, and the celebratory period was made official on August 17, 1988. This year, the theme of the Hispanic Heritage Month is "Todos Somos, Somos Uno: We Are All, We Are One," revering the significant contributions Hispanic people—both natives and immigrants, from regions such as Spain, Mexico, Africa, the Caribbean, Central, and South America—have made to our society.
In a first in Boston, the Tu Hispanidad Flag was patriotically hoisted over the City Hall Plaza, and October 11, 2023, was proclaimed as Hispanidad Flag Day in the City of Boston. This momentous symbol and proclamation aim to advance unity and acknowledge the Hispanic community's essential role in Boston's progress and development.
The Pilares de la Hispanidad Award was endowed on thirteen recipients, hailing from various walks of life, like education, entrepreneurship, arts, social work, and advocacy, to name a few. The award winners included Lina Marcela Bustamante, Brian Chavez, Doug Chavez, Alex Garcia, Joselina Leon, Franklin Marval, Councilor Julia Mejia, Carol Miranda, Claudia Osorio, Sgardy Peña, Gloria Rivera, Noemy Rodriguez, and Jose Valenzuela. Given their significant positive influences within their communities, these recipients truly reflect the spirit of the Hispanic Heritage Month theme.
