Yesterday, a Monroe County jury found 22-year-old Boston man, Kelvin Vickers, guilty of a deadly rampage in Rochester, New York. The violent spree claimed the life of a police officer, injured another, and led to the death of two more individuals, as reported by Boston.com. Reactions have varied with some illustrating the legal argument of insufficient proof, and others focusing on the broader societal implications.
Vickers' lawyer, Michael Schiano intends to appeal based on the lack of definitive evidence proving Vickers' role as the gunman. Schiano also criticized the combining of the two murder indictments into a single trial, which he alleges hindered the possibility of a fair trial, according to the Associated Press.
Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley shared that, Vickers was already known to law enforcement in the Boston area prior to his involvement in a Rochester gang dispute, as mentioned by WGRZ. Vickers shot three men in July 2022, killing Richard Collinge and MyJel Rand, and injuring Tireek Burden. Officers Anthony Mazurkiewicz and Sino Seng came under fire from Vickers during an undercover operation the next day, with Mazurkiewicz losing his life and Seng gravely wounded.
One of Vickers' shots penetrated a nearby house, injuring a 15-year-old girl inside. He's also believed responsible for a car fire that spread to a house, fuelling the local devastation.
Vickers has been convicted on numerous charges including aggravated murder of a police officer, first-degree and second-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, arson, and various weapons charges.
Vickers faces life in prison without parole at his sentencing on December 7, per Boston.com.
