Yesterday, a crowd rallied at the John F. Kennedy building in Boston to demand a halt in the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict. The building is the location of Senator Elizabeth Warren's local office. Rally participants called upon the senator and other Massachusetts leaders to implore the federal government for a swift resolution, as reported by Boston 25 News. The previous day witnessed a similar event outside Warren's Springfield office, per the Boston Herald.
Responding to the demonstrators, Senator Warren said, "I appreciate the people who came to my office to share their perspectives and experiences—that’s what democracy is about. Israel has both a right to defend itself from terrorist attacks and an obligation to protect innocent civilians under the international laws of war. Palestinian civilians have a right to humanitarian aid including food, water, shelter, and medicine," as stated in a WCVB article.
Despite her response, a portion of the demonstrators expressed dissatisfaction over what they saw as a lack of active pursuit of peace. Seven, including Daniel Zackin, were arrested for refusing to leave the JFK Federal Building after closing hours, as reported by Boston 25 News. All were later released with either a citation or court summons, according to Boston Herald.
Many protesters advocated for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation in Gaza. Protester and IfNotNow Boston member, Mira Revesz, stated, "Senator Warren has the power to call for the over 100 trucks of humanitarian aid stuck outside of Gaza, to be allowed in," as reported by the Boston Herald.
The ongoing war that began on October 7 has brought about increasing humanitarian concerns in Gaza. The Gaza Health Ministry, run by Hamas, reports over 3,478 Palestinians dead and upwards of 12,000 injured in less than two weeks according to Boston 25 News. More than 1,400 Israelis have died, and a minimum of 199 others, including children, were abducted by Hamas, as reported by WCVB.
