In a Boston, Massachusetts courtroom, registered sex offender, Angel Figueroa, age 51, faced child exploitation charges to which he pleaded guilty. This conviction, recently highlighted by the United States Department of Justice, is another case of persistent abuse.

As reported by the Justice Department, Figueroa was convicted on one count each of receipt and possession of child pornography. His past includes a 2013 conviction by a Massachusetts state court for indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. This latest conviction could result in a prison sentence of 15 to 40 years, lifetime supervised release, and a civil penalty of up to $250,000.

Figueroa's case is to not just an isolated one. With tech advancement, accessing and disseminating illicit materials has become increasingly easy. Evidence from Figueroa's cell phone showed possession of approximately 523 images and 72 videos of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The victims in these graphic materials ranged from infants to kids below two years old, some subjected to bondage. Figueroa later confessed to engaging in this grisly behavior using messaging apps for about one to two years.

While consequences could potentially discourage similar criminals, the crucial focus needs be widened for protecting our children. It is essential to acknowledge the importance of preventive measures and comprehend that resources dedicated to combeating this issue may not always suffice. Even as the Department of Justice's Project Safe Childhood tirelessly pursues to identify, detain and prosecute individuals exploiting children, we must maintain vigilance in our daily lives.

Figueroa's sentencing is scheduled on January 26th, 2024.
