
Earlier this week, activist and Massachusetts native, 32-year-old Ryan Carson, was fatally stabbed in Brooklyn. The accused, 18-year-old Brooklyn local Brian Dowling, is facing charges of murder and unlawful weapon possession, according to Boston.com.
Carson had gained significant recognition for his role as campaign manager for New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) and his work on the NO O.D. N.Y. campaign. He also made a name for himself as a talented poet. His contributions were publicly praised by Senate Majority Leader and fellow Brooklyn resident, Sen. Chuck Schumer.
At around 4am, Carson and his girlfriend encountered Dowling on Bedford-Stuyvesant's streets where the incident unfolded. According to Boston.com, video footage showed Dowling damaging scooters prior to approaching Carson and his girlfriend. Despite Carson's attempts to diffuse the situation, Dowling to attacked him.
The upcoming trial awaits Dowling, who stands accused of committing murder with depraved indifference,WCVB reports. This incident has spurred public discourse around safety in New York City, further emphasized by Mayor Eric Adams' determined vow to avenge Carson's death.
