California Governor Gavin Newsom has recently propelled the quest for student board member recognition and compensation forward, by signing AB 275 into law on October 7. As reported by the San Diego Unified School District, this law gives local school and county boards the option to remunerate student board members for their contributions.

Student board members are appointed to represent their peers in important decision-making processes, having previously faced economic impediments due to the unpaid nature of the positions. This change permits greater diversity and equal opportunity ensuring that economic barriers no longer stand in the way of capable students from low-income families.

The driving force for this change, Assemblymember Chris Ward (D-San Diego), declared, “AB 275 empowers student voices, increases accessibility to these positions, and signals the value of their leadership in representing students.”

With over 270 school districts in California accommodating high school students, this new enactment affects a significant number of potential student board members. The law also enables county boards of education to, from 2022 onwards, select student board members.

According to Lamont Jackson, the superintendent of San Diego Unified School District, the community thrives when students are incorporated in meaningful decision-making. By acknowledging student contributions, the pressure of fulfilling these roles without financial support is lifted.

San Diego Unified School District School Board Member, Blessyn Lavender Williams, reflected on her experience with the previous unpaid condition. She expressed her delight for future students who no longer need to choose between college savings and voicing their concerns for their district.

Addressing the financial constraints on student board members fosters a more inclusive and diverse decision-making body within the education system. The importance of student voices in educational discussions is critical and should be equally valued as those of adults.

Moreover, another school board member of San Diego Unified School District, Matthew Quitoriano, emphasized the importance of recognizing the hard work put in by student board members. He commented, “Student board members put in hard work and dedication, and we need to respect them in the same manner we respect any other elected official.”
