On October 30, a protest at Israeli defense contractor Elbit Systems in Cambridge escalated into a conflict between law enforcement and protestors. Nine individuals were arrested following assaults on police officers, according to a report by the Cambridge Police Department.
The initial protest, comprised of about 200 individuals, began peacefully. To provide a safe environment for the protestors, local law enforcement had even closed a nearby road. However, several individuals, amidst the protestors, broke through metal barricades and began to damage the contractor's business. In an attempt to detain a few who were defacing the building, officials were assaulted by a group with items like smoke pellets and eggs, as chronicled by the same police report.
Following the event, a variety of perspectives have emerged. Cambridge Police officers maintain they were giving protestors ample space and opportunities for free speech. In contrast, the protestors express strong opposition to Elbit Systems, calling for accountability and action.
According to the police account, the nine arrested individuals now prepare for their pending legal processes in Cambridge District Court.
