Earlier today, a hit-and-run incident occurred in Charlton, where a driver struck a dog and did not report the incident, violating state law. The incident happened on City Depot Road around 7 a.m. and the responsible driver remains unidentified as per NBC Boston. The dog's medical condition is not yet known.
According to Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 272, Section 80 H, drivers who hit and injuries a dog or cat must immediately report the occurrence to the animal's owner, its custodian, or a local police officer as Boston25 News reports. Failure to comply can lead to a fine up to $100 or short-duration imprisonment for first time offenders. Tougher penalties are prescribed for repeat offenders, including heftier fines and longer jail terms.
The Charlton Police Department is currently on the hunt for the offender, according to WCVB. In response to this incident, authorities are reinforcing the town's 24-hour leash law, reminding residents that dogs must be on a "substantial chain" and under control of a capable person. Failure in compliance to swiftly act can label the dog an "at large dog," in direct violation of the town's by-law.
With the ongoing investigation, hopes are high for the dog's recovery and for identifying the individual responsible for the accident. Anybody with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Charlton Police Department at 508-248-2250 or the Charlton Animal Control Officer at 508-248-2398.
