On Friday, October 13th, the Justice Department press release informed that Miguel Reyes, a Chelsea, Massachusetts resident was sentenced to two years in prison following federal firearms offenses. This sentencing underscores the law enforcement agencies' ongoing efforts to mitigate gun violence and violent crime.
To quickly serve time, Reyes faced sentencing by U.S. District Court Patti B. Saris for two counts of felonious possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as one count of being a felon in possession of ammunition. The sentencing stemmed from August 2020 incidents wherein Reyes was caught with a Beretta, Model U22, .22 LR caliber pistol, Glock, Model 48, 9mm pistol, and ammunition. In May 2021, Reyes was arrested again in Chelsea, this time found carrying a Glock replica, polymer 80, and extra ammunition, honestly violating his ban from owning firearms and ammunition due to a previous felony conviction.
The sentencing is an outcome of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a program designed to synergize the efforts of multiple levels of law enforcement and actively integrate within the communities they serve. PSN, initiated on May 26, 2021, is a violent crime reduction strategy that emphasizes fostering trust within communities, supporting preventative organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and tracking results.
