Jacob N. Spiro, the prime suspect in a series of bomb threats across several suburbs and Chicago, was apprehended on Monday, October 9th. The arrest, which took place in Niles and involved coordination between the Niles police force, Morton Grove Police, and the FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force, has provided a measure of relief in the area, reports the Chicago Tribune.
Spiro is now faced with felony charges for disorderly conduct, with the possibility of additional charges being laid. Investigation, that involved detectives from multiple jurisdictions such as Niles, Wilmette, Morton Grove, Skokie, Northbrook, and Glenview, led to Spiro's identification. Spiro's connection to the threats was established through digital forensics.
Several libraries, businesses, suburban governments, and a police station in several suburbs and Chicago were forced to take security measures or shut down in response to bomb threats in August and September of 2023. As per police statements quoted by the Chicago Tribune, Spiro is believed to have delivered 11 threats in Niles, 12 in Morton Grove, and 16 in Skokie.
Numerous locations including the Morton Grove Library, the Village of Morton Grove, and locate businesses were the targets of these threats. Surrounding establishments, such as Notre Dame High School in Niles, also received threatening calls about potential bombs or acts of violence, but none of these threats turned out to be credible as stated by Patch.
In the wake of a threat against a Wendy's in the Golf Milwaukee Plaza in Niles, Spiro was arrested. Currently facing felony charges from at least four police departments, Spiro is also charged with false reporting of a terrorist threat, a Class 1 felony. Spiro's pre-trial court appearance is set for October 11, 2023, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Digital forensic evidence used upon Spiro's arrest led investigators to confirm him as the instigator behind some of the dozens of threats. This successful application of technology and collaboration helped law enforcement unravel the extensive network of threats and secure the suspect in custody.
Investigations into bomb threats in other areas like Evanston remain underway.
