Motor vehicle thefts are on the rise in Chicago's 1st District, prompting a community alert from the Chicago Police Department. The incidents, mainly affecting Beats 132 and 133, have recorded the majority of offenses this month wherein the thieves forcibly entered parked, locked vehicles by breaking driver or passenger side windows.
Despite efforts from local authorities to apprehend offenders and support victims, motor vehicle theft remains a significant problem. Chicago police, therefore, will provide complimentary traceable markings for catalytic converters and reimburse GPS tracker registration costs, as noted in their community alert.
In addition, ensuring motor vehicles and personal belongings are secured can help tackle the ongoing vehicle theft. The CPD suggests maintaining copies of license plates and vehicle identification numbers (VIN) could aid law enforcement and speed up the recovery process should a theft occur.
