The Chula Vista Public Library has been awarded nearly $19.5 million in state grants for necessary enhancements in the Civic Center and South Branch libraries. As announced on the city's official website yesterday, these grants, originating from the California State Library’s Building Forward Library Facilities Improvement Program, will ensure the ongoing functionality and service of the libraries to the Chula Vista community.
If we look at, the funding background, in the second round of the state's largest single investment in public libraries, Chula Vista Public Library's projects were among 34 selected from across the state to receive grant funding. Over $312 million was distributed to public libraries in 182 cities across 34 California counties in the first round. Chula Vista's share of the nearly $173 million is earmarked for the Civic Center and South Branch libraries, as per the information shared by the city.
From March 2024, the construction will take place, with their completion predicted by 2027. The grant will back essential renovations to the libraries, helping them retain their stature as Chula Vista's key cultural and recreational facilities.
The Civic Center Branch, established in 1976 and accommodating over 600,000 annual visitors, will see several updates. Among them are renovations to electrical panels and services, the HVAC system, and exterior and interior paint and stucco. The outdated elevator will also be replaced.
For the South Branch, built in 1995 and welcoming nearly 190,000 visitors yearly, plans include new flooring, refurbishing the HVAC and electrical systems, repairing and painting the interior and exterior stucco, and other various repairs throughout the facility.
Thanks go to the Deputy Director of Community Services, Joy Whatley, with her team, as they've worked to secure the grant and ensure that much-needed renovations for the libraries would be funded.
In a statement, Whatley expressed her appreciation for the state's investment, saying “These grants from the California State Library allow us to improve our facilities for future generations.” She emphasized, “The renovations to our branches will help the Civic Center and South libraries remain a core part of Chula Vista's culture and recreation for decades to come.”
