On Wednesday, a domestic dispute in Round Lake Beach, Illinois, resulted in a fatal police shooting of a man in his 20s. The suspect, allegedly wielding a sledgehammer, inflicted serious head injuries on two women, believed to be his mother and aunt, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force responded to a 3:15 p.m. distress call to the 2000 block of Redwood Drive. Officers medicated the victims on arrival, and hastened their transport to a hospital as detailed by WGN-TV.
The as-yet-unidentified suspect confronted the officers at the front door, brandishing a sledgehammer. Efforts to mollify him were unsuccessful and he assaulted the officers. An attempt at Taser deployment was ineffective and, ultimately, the officers resorted to using lethal force, the Chicago Sun-Times stated.
The condition of the suspect's mental health is currently under investigation. Notably, the two victims are now in stable condition according to WGN-TV.
Three officers involved in this situation were taken to the hospital for evaluations. Led by the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, the investigation is active, triggering discussions on effective police response and adequate mental health support in crisis situations.
