As technological innovation permeates society, the use of Automated License Plate Reading (ALPR) in El Cajon has been aiding law enforcement agencies in curbing vehicle-related crime and recovering stolen items.
The citywide positioning of ALPR cameras facilitates the identification of suspect vehicles by scanning and cross-referencing license plates against state and national databases. A real-time crime alert is sent to the police if a stolen or flagged vehicle is detected, enabling quick action.
Over a short period, this implementation has led the El Cajon Police Department to locate successfully stolen four vehicles and arresting four individuals, including Jonathan Hilario (48) of San Diego, per the El Cajon news report.
These recovered vehicles, estimated to be worth around $58,000, were returned to the innovative owners. As reported on the El Cajon government website, the ALPR program consequently serves to boost the capabilities of the police department in crime prevention.
