A 53-year-old man, Carlos Cooks from Elk Grove, has been hit with major charges by the Cook County Sheriff's Office for allegedly forcing an individual into the sex trade. On October 7, 2023, Cooks was booked on charges of Involuntary Servitude, Trafficking in Persons, and Promotion of Prostitution.
The Cook County Sheriff's police began their probe, of the alleged human trafficking operation back in January 2023. Their investigation unearthed Cooks' alleged pattern of exploitation.
Online ads for sexual services helped to discover the victim's plight. Investigators claim that Cooks controlled key parts of the operation, such as determining prices, setting up meetings, finding hotel rooms and taking full control of the income.
It is also alleged that Cooks used physical abuse, including threatening the victim with a firearm, when the victim would not comply. The Cook County Sheriff's Office revealed these allegations, stating these acts were performed at Palatine hotels.
The timelines show that the Cook County law enforcement moved quickly, from an initial tip in January to Cooks' arrest on October 6. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office has approved the charges, which now push forward the pursuit to justice for victims of trafficking.
