Tod Erickson, a 60-year-old former IT manager from a Quebec City-based telecommunications company, was recently sentenced for stealing over $1.4 million in computer equipment from his employer and filing a false tax return, reported the Department of Justice.
Earlier today, 2023, U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani sentenced Erickson to one year and one day in prison. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $1,596,328 and forfeit an additional $1,457,429. Erickson pleaded guilty to wire fraud and filing a false tax return on May 18, 2023.
Erickson, as the IT manager, submitted purchase requests for unnecessary computer equipment from January 2012 to February 2019. To not get caught, Erickson sold these items to third parties without his employer's knowledge or approval.
Erickson also committed tax fraud by ever intentionally underreporting his income in the 2016 tax year. He failed to declare the money he'd made from selling the stolen property.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigations, among others law enforcement agencies, played significant roles in ensuring that Erickson was held accountable. Their investigation led directly to his sentencing.
