Earlier today, an explosion shook a residential neighborhood in Woodstock, Illinois. A two-story home was completely destroyed while ten more buildings sustained severe damage. Among the affected structures was the local St. Mary Catholic Church and School. This unfortunate event emphasizes the potential dangers of natural gas leaks and reinforces the importance of following strict safety measures.
As reported by the Chicago Tribune, firefighters initially rushed to the scene in response to reports of a natural gas smell. Upon their arrival, they discovered that a two-inch gas main within a sewer line had been hit. As a precautionary measure, fire officials quickly evacuated the nearby St. Mary Catholic Church and School, while advising local residents to stay put until the situation was under control. Unfortunately, the situation escalated, resulting in the explosion of a two-story home on Lincoln Avenue at approximately 2:38 p.m. The blast ignited multiple fires.
The explosion, which immediately flattened the home, prompted a call to roughly 20 fire agencies. These agencies tirelessly worked to mitigate the damage. Despite the scale of the event, there were thankfully no significant injuries to report. All dislocated residents have now been accounted for and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. Nonetheless, two firefighters were transported to nearby hospitals with minor injuries, according to CBS 58.
Presently, the cause of the explosion is still being thoroughly investigated.
