A man in Florida was charged with defrauding an elderly Lake Forest, Illinois, resident. Law enforcement arrested Luc Vautier, 22, on October 6th, 2023, after he reportedly misrepresented himself as the victim's grandson, asking for $12,000 bail for a purported traffic mishap. This was reported by Fox 32 Chicago.
According to Patch, Vautier was caught at the targeted elderly individual's home by Lake Forest police as he was to collect his fraudulent claim. The accused is now facing two charges of theft by deception, a class 2 felony, related to this alleged scam attempt and another similar case with no connection from the region.
Phone scams have significantly increased in the recent years, with criminals intentionally targeting vulnerable and older individuals because these demographics tend to have limited awareness of such deceptive tactics often. The criminals are after swift access to money, leveraging the victims' emotions to gain their compliance.
The Lake Forest police, responding to this rise in scams, are currently pursuing leads to possibly find out if Vautier involved others in his illegal activities. Deputy Chief Michael Lorge refrained from detailing further to the Patch, to maintain the investigation's integrity.
