Three more cases of Salmonella have been linked to the consumption of raw milk from a Fresno-based producer. According to San Diego County health officials, the total local cases now amount to 12 - with three individuals requiring hospitalization.

On October 24, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a recall for specific varieties of Raw Farm milk and heavy cream. Interestingly, no other raw milk products were not listed in the recall notice.

County health officials are advising against the consumption of Raw Farm LLC raw milk, and are urging consumers to dispose of it due to the risk of Salmonella. A dozen cases in San Diego reported consuming this product prior to experiencing symptoms. Case tracking in other areas is managed by local health departments and CDPH.

Raw milk refers to unpasteurized dairy products that can retain harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, and other germs, including various viruses and parasites. Pasteurization is a process that removes most of these pathogens but doesn't significantly alter milk's nutritional composition.

This recall is isolated from the Salmonella Thompson cases linked to Gills Onions Diced Onion products. According to the County News Center, there have been 17 California cases associated with the Salmonella Thompson outbreak. San Diego reported two incidents in August, with no new cases since then.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) discourages the consumption of raw milk and its related products, particularly for vulnerable individuals such as older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella infection include severe digestive issues and fever, which can culminate in hospitalization in severe instances.

Investigation of illnesses tied to raw milk and its products is underway by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, California Department of Public Health, and the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Anyone with symptoms is urged to consult a healthcare provider. Information on raw milk safety can be found on the CDC's website.
